Now, let me introduce to you the newest loves of my life: the Birkenstocks. I know, I can’t even believe that sentence just came out of my fingertips, but it did, and it’s true.
My mother, a fond wearer of this kind of comfort sandal, turned me off of them at a young age. The phrase, “Ugh, are you seriously going to wear those Birkenstocks?” came out of my mouth regularly over the years, and somewhere along the way I swore off these creatures forever… Well, this is a case where the forever did NOT stick. Admittedly, seasonal trends, the blogosphere and Celine made me take a second look at these bad boys. And, in all honesty, my initial opinion of this onset footwear fad was not far from the avid judgments I bestowed upon my mom for all those years. But then, about a week before I left on an 11 day trip journeying through Europe, it hit me, and it hit me hard. I was looking to pack a cool, chic comfort shoe for the endless hours of walking and train travel. I had a few pairs of black leather ankle boots, and not much else. That’s when I realized I had to have a pair of Birkenstocks… When did the magical transformation occur in my brain when Birkenstocks went from god-awful to cool and chic? I don’t know, but it happened, and it was dramatic.
And now, I am happy and surprised to say that I have been converted to a Birkenstock wearer. I will never, ever turn my back on these magical creatures ever again. They are comfortable, they are chic, and they are easy! What else can you ask for in a shoe?
As usual, mother really does know best! When will I learn to listen?
Okay, bye.
